Why Referral Metrics?

The inspiration for creating Referral Metrics (a short demo video is available at www.excelleweb.com/referral_metrics.html) was that I personally had a difficult time managing all of my networking activities.  I've been a member of AmSpirit Business Connections for more than a decade.  But if you were to ask me how many referrals I've personally given and received in that period of time, I couldn't accurately answer the question.  Every year structured referral groups count the number of referrals, but most wipe the slate clean at the end of the year and start over again in January.

What I really want to know about my own networking efforts are:

  • Where should I spend my time networking to get the best results?
  • Who are my best referral partners?  Accountants or bankers?  What category of business person should I network with the most?
  • How much revenue do I generate from my networking efforts?
There are other insightful measurements that can be made, but you get the idea.

Sales prospecting is calling on everyone you know to increase your own sales, even if it's getting someone to refer you to the end customer it's still prospecting.  Networking, when done correctly, is helping others get what they want and in return you'll also benefit.  However, the benefit to you may not be immediate.  It may take weeks, months, or years to pay off.  People will naturally want to reciprocate and help you if they perceive that you are a GIVER and not a TAKER.
